Wellington Zoo

Last week Room 1 went to Wellington for four days. On the first day we went to the zoo. We walked along a footpath and saw a sign that said Welcome Waikawa Bay School. A zoo keeper came out and we went into the zoo school. She talked to us about different kinds of animal habitats and we did activities. Afterwards we went to see the animals. My favourite part was the giraffe enclosure because we could see them getting fed and we could see there long necks and their blue tongues. They were really close. It was cool!

2008 Gala

On the 18th of October we had the most successful gala we have ever had. We had to learn to give change in class. We had raised more than $5000!!! I reckon the most successful thing in the Gala was the Titanic bouncy castle. But everything was Great. The food the drinks and the games.

Wellington Fitness

This term, Rm 1 has been having a huge fitness term.  We have been practicing  for Wellington and everyday we have been jogging down the width of the tennis court.  We have 2 minutes to run and when our time is up we come back in and graph it.  My highest score is 15 laps, really I did 30 but we are only allowed to count every second lap because the width is a short distance to run.  It is tough but we have to get fit for Wellington.  In Wellington we have to walk everyday up and down many different hills.  It would be hard but it also it would be extremely fun.  I am looking forward to going to Wellington next month.

Shading

First I thought about where my sun/ light source was going to be coming from. Next I got a light green pastel and slowly started working across the hills, then with a darker green colour  I added shaded areas away from my light source.  I started with the lighter green so it shows where the light shines first.  I used the same method with the sun.

Opposing Colors

I have learnt about opposing colours on the colour wheel.  I used red and green, orange and black on my calendar design and I think, so far is looking pretty good! Hopefully when I finish it will be a calendar design my mum want to send overseas to my relatives in England!

POLICE EQUIPMENT

Cops wear duty belts to carry equipment they may need, like...
Face Shields, Latex Gloves, Mobile Phone, Mini Torch, All-In-One Utility Knife Tool Kit ,Notebook, Pen, Breath Tester, Ticket Book,Handcuffs, O/C Spray, Baton and Radio-Telephone. All these things can come in handy. With all this equipment the Police Force can save many lives, the equipment may seem a little ordinary but its very helpful!

I have just found a new tool. We are looking at respect as a quality and I have found a new tool to help me advertise this. What do you think?

Mrs P

Symbols

Rm 1 has been doing symbols about themselves, they drew pictures and explained why they chose those symbols. Not long after that Mrs Parsons got a set of books she found and brought it to Rm 1, she brought books about countries, she only brought some countries which are the main countries who were participating in the great Olympic Games. We are to be the ambassadors of the country. We had to choose five symbols for that country we chose. The country I chose was Beautiful Brazil. The symbols had to be a landmark, sport, food, an animal, ceramics. It was very interesting, as you learn a new culture and learn more about that country. Its a very interesting project and I hope we all do well.

CHINESE DRAGONS

On Wednesday and Thursday Room 1 started and completed our own, paper Chinese Dragons in our own individual styles. We first cut out the head, then the flames to stick on it. We then progressed to the beard, nostrils and teeth. We folded bits of paper together to make the springy body. To finish off we cut strips of paper and curled them to make the tail. I really enjoyed this activity and I think they turned out really well.

Maths- multiplying in Tens, Hundreds and Thousands.
Today Math group triangles, learned about multiplying Tens,Hundreds and Thousands,it's easier than it sounds all you have to do with tens is add a zero 2x10=20 all you have to do is put a 0 on the end of the 2. With Hundreds you have to add 2 zeros 2x100=200 another way to remember this sum is to+ 1 more 100. With thousands you just have to add 3 zeros like 2x1000=2000.

China

This term, Room 1 have been learning about the Olympic Games which is held in Beijing China.
Today, we told the teacher everything we knew about China. I learnt in the year 206BC China exported lacquer ware and silks. In 1959 China invaded Tibet and Dhali Lama went into exile. The Great Wall in the Qin dynasty had an origin , not till the Ming dynasty that it was built to current form. There is NO freedom of speech and lack of human rights. You are only allowed 1 child per family. Its a communist country and China was the name given by the west. It was all very interesting .

Thirding

Room's 1 maths group the Spheres is learning about doubling, halving and thirding.  First, we learnt about doubling and halving, like in a multiplication equation you would take the easiest number to halve and halve it, and take the easiest number to double and double it, in order to get the answer, for example...5 x 18 = 10 x 9 = 190 - see?
All I did was double the 5 and halve the 18 in order to get the answer.
Thirding is just the same except you do it in threes. Like 24 x 3, I third the 24 and triple the 3 to get 24x3=8x9=72!
This strategy is really cool and I'm sure it will help me heaps in bigger maths problems when I'm older!

My Imaginative Story

I wrote an imaginative story called Wild Horse. I have learnt how to use a numbered brainstorm and add lots of adjectives so I make my writing is interesting for my audience. When I number my brainstorm it makes it easy to write in paragraphs, this also makes it easier for me to write an interesting story.

Fiordland Holiday By Gloria Harvey

Yesterday Room 1's maths group the Spheres got an awesome new game called Fiordland Holiday.
It's a really fun maths game and it's really good way to learn your advanced times tables like on one of the cards it's got on a Milford Sound day tour, see the famous Mirror Lakes Score 3 x 300 points. Then you would work out the equation and in these circumstances  you would have 9oo points! Sometimes you only get to solve a problem but thats still fun.   You travel round the board and if you land on an animal you get the amount of points that's written down on the board. Whoever gets the most points wins the game.I'm really happy we got the new game and I bet people will stay happy using it!

Ballroom dancing

I learnt that there are many types of dances that link to Ballroom dancing like Tango, Jive, Salsa, and ChaCha. Ballroom dancing is all about flashy costumes and make up. You have to be fit and learn complicated dance skills, such as turns and dips. There are two different types of tango, the American Tango and the International Tango. Tango came from Argentina and made its way to Europe and gained popularity in Paris. As the European dancers enjoyed the music and the passion of the dance, they began to inject their own culture, style and technique. In an effort to teach a standardized version of Tango, the English eventually codified their own version of Tango for instruction in dance schools and for preformance in competitions in 1922.

Morris dancing

Last Wednesday a group of Morris Dancers came to our school to show us some dances.  I learnt that because the Morris Dancers used to dance in barns, they wore bells around their ankles to scare away the mice, but the bells also help keep the beat. They also used big hankies for some dances and they used them to scare away any witches that might have been about.  Morris Dancing is usually about things that happen in their everyday lives, like a rain or sunshine dance.   My favorite dance was the Lollypop Dance.

Learning how to use a dictionary .

The other day Mrs P taught me how to use the dictionary .
I looked up the word translate. To do this I had to say the first sounds so I could look through the dictionary till I got to the 'T's. Then I had to listen to the next sound which was 'r', so I went through the 'T' section looking for the 'tr' words. Then I had to listen to the 'an' part of the the word and finally the 'late' part of the word.

Jake's Spider

Last night I found a spider in my shed. At school we look it up in some books. We discoved it was a Wolf Spider. This is what we found out:
The Wolf spider is native to New Zealand and is common in gardens. For five weeks, Female carries her egg sac. Then her 100 or so young climb on her back to be carried around for an other week, until old enough to look after themselves. They hunt on the ground by day, finding its way with polarised light. They are called a Wolf Spider because of the way the way they run down their pray. There are 12 different species known in New Zealand.
